Leidos is seeking a Data Pipeline / Splunk Engineering Intern with a Computer Science, Data Science, or similar technical background to join our team in support of the SMIT contract, the largest IT services program for the U.S. Navy.
Under the Service Management, Integration, and Transport (SMIT) program, the Leidos team delivers the core backbone of the Navy–Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI), including cybersecurity services, network operations, service desk, and data transport. The team supports the Navy in unifying enterprise data to improve operational visibility, reliability, and decision-making.
The successful candidate will support data ingestion, transformation, and analytics pipelines that feed Splunk dashboards and monitoring solutions used by network operations teams, site reliability engineers (SREs), and executive leadership. This internship provides hands-on experience in data engineering, Python development, enterprise observability, and Agile delivery within a mission-critical environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Support development and maintenance of data pipelines that ingest, transform, and deliver data to Splunk and analytics platforms
- Write and maintain Python scripts to process log, metric, and event data
- Assist with data validation, normalization, and enrichment to improve data quality and usability
- Support onboarding of new data sources from infrastructure, applications, and network systems
- Assist with building dashboards and visualizations that consume pipeline-produced data
- Perform analysis, trending, and exploratory data analysis to identify insights and anomalies
- Collaborate with Splunk developers, SREs, and operations teams to understand data requirements
- Participate in Agile ceremonies including daily scrums, sprint planning, and retrospectives
- Contribute to backlog items, technical documentation, and process improvements
- Work with a geographically distributed (remote) team
Basic Qualifications
- Enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
- Experience with Python programming
- Coursework or hands-on experience with data processing or data pipelines
- Familiarity with structured or semi-structured data (e.g., JSON, CSV, log files)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and learn in a fast-paced technical environment
- Holds or has ability to obtain a Secret Level security clearance
- US citizenship required
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to Splunk or other log analytics / observability platforms
- Experience with data visualization tools or libraries (e.g., Splunk dashboards, matplotlib, Plotly, Power BI, Tableau)
- Familiarity with REST APIs and data ingestion patterns
- Exposure to Linux environments or command-line tooling
- Experience with version control systems such as Git
- Familiarity with Agile development and tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps
- Interest in data engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE), or observability platforms
- Security+ certification or interest in pursuing DoD-aligned certifications
