  • Ability to translate ambiguous business requests into functional technical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with diverse, non-technical teams.

Objective

The AI Innovation Intern supports the responsible, practical, and effective use of artificial intelligence across Perspective Therapeutics. This six-month internship is designed for current students and recent graduates seeking hands-on experience building and applying AI solutions in a biotechnology environment. During this full-time, onsite internship, the intern will help design and develop internal AI-enabled tools and workflows, prepare training and enablement materials, test emerging AI capabilities, and support teams in identifying opportunities to apply AI to their work.

This role is well suited for a proactive self-starter who is eager to learn how different functions operate and translate business needs into practical, buildable solutions. The ideal candidate is highly comfortable with modern AI tools and has experience or a strong interest in AI-assisted development using platforms such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar tools.

Working collaboratively with technical and non-technical colleagues, the AI Innovation Intern will prototype solutions, gather feedback, communicate limitations clearly, and help establish thoughtful practices for the use of AI, including careful handling of sensitive data and critical evaluation of AI-generated output.

This position is temporary, with an expected duration of 6 months.

Essential Functions

AI Tool & Workflow Development

  • Help design, build, and improve internal AI tools, automations, and workflows that address practical business needs.
  • Use AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar platforms to develop working prototypes and production-ready solutions, as appropriate.
  • Write and maintain code in Python, JavaScript, and/or TypeScript; connect to APIs; and work with real-world inputs such as spreadsheets, PDFs, documents, and exported data.
  • Create rapid prototypes, place early versions in front of users, gather feedback, and iterate based on usability, reliability, and business value.
  • Document solution requirements, design choices, dependencies, testing results, known limitations, and recommended next steps.

Business Partnership & Opportunity Identification

  • Meet with teams across the organization to understand how their work is performed, identify pain points, and evaluate where AI may provide meaningful support.
  • Translate broad or ambiguous requests from non-technical users into clearly scoped problems, requirements, and buildable solutions.
  • Help assess potential AI use cases based on feasibility, expected value, risk, data sensitivity, maintainability, and user readiness.
  • Collaborate effectively with business, operations, research, clinical, and other functional partners, adjusting communication for each audience.

Testing, Evaluation & Responsible AI

  • Test new AI tools, models, and capabilities using defined scenarios and representative inputs.
  • Evaluate AI-generated output for accuracy, consistency, completeness, usability, and common large language model failure modes, including fabricated or unsupported information.
  • Identify risks, edge cases, and performance limitations; communicate findings clearly and recommend appropriate controls or human review.
  • Follow company policies and applicable requirements for privacy, information security, confidential information, and responsible use of AI.
  • Use appropriate judgment when working with sensitive business, employee, research, clinical, or healthcare-related information.

Training, Enablement & Adoption

  • Prepare clear, practical user guides, job aids, demonstrations, and training materials for non-technical audiences.
  • Explain what an AI-enabled tool does, does not do, and how users should review or validate its output.
  • Support demonstrations, office hours, pilot activities, feedback sessions, and other adoption efforts.
  • Share lessons learned, reusable approaches, and effective practices that help teams use AI confidently and responsibly.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education/Experience

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in computer science, engineering, biostatistics, data science, or another technical or technology-focused business field.
  • Experience using Claude Code, Cursor, or a similar AI coding tool to build and deliver at least one working project beyond guided tutorials.
  • Experience building an application, tool, automation, or technical project that was used by others, with the ability to explain key design and implementation decisions.
  • Coursework or practical experience in programming and data structures; exposure to databases, machine learning, or software development practices is preferred.
  • Experience working with a client, internal team, consulting group, student organization, or freelance project to understand a problem and deliver a technical solution is preferred.
  • Interest in biotechnology, clinical research, healthcare, or life sciences data is a plus but is not required.

Knowledge / Skill / Ability

  • Practical programming ability in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript, including experience calling APIs and working with imperfect or unstructured real-world data.
  • Ability to use AI coding tools to build, debug, test, and improve working solutions rather than relying solely on tutorials or generated code without validation.
  • Ability to learn how non-technical teams work, ask effective questions, and translate a vague request into a defined and appropriately scoped solution.
  • Comfort with rapid prototyping and iterative development, including gathering user feedback and refining a solution without over-planning.
  • Understanding of common large language model limitations and failure modes, with a skeptical and methodical approach to testing AI capabilities.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts, limitations, and instructions to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong curiosity, adaptability, initiative, and willingness to learn unfamiliar business processes and subject matter.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, seek guidance when appropriate, and follow through on commitments.
  • Ability to collaborate productively with colleagues outside of engineering and adapt communication style to different functions and levels of technical familiarity.
  • Sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential, sensitive, proprietary, research, clinical, employee, or business information.

Preferred Background

Candidates do not need to meet every preferred qualification. We encourage current students, recent graduates, and early-career candidates who meet some of the criteria and are excited about the role to apply.

  • Has built at least one working application, tool, or automation that other people used and can walk through the problem, technical choices, trade-offs, and results.
  • Has collaborated with business, operations, research, clinical, or other non-engineering partners and adapted technical communication for that audience.
  • Has taken ownership of a project with an unclear scope and determined what to build without step-by-step direction.
  • Has participated in a consulting internship, student consulting group, capstone, research project, freelance engagement, or similar experience involving a real stakeholder.
  • Has experience preparing user documentation, delivering a demonstration, conducting training, or supporting adoption of a new tool.
  • Demonstrates curiosity about biotechnology, clinical research, healthcare data, and the responsible use of AI in a regulated environment.
